The doodle tells the story of a boy who has a crush on a jump-roping girl, and in an effort to woo her, uses Google to search for gift ideas. With Tony Bennett's cover of "Cold, Cold Heart" crooning in the background, the boy tries again and again, lavishing her with flowers, chocolates, a diver's helmet, and magic tricks, until he's almost defeated. Then he reappears one day with a common interest -- a jump rope -- and wins her affections.

It's humbling for Google to confess that even with its super powerful search engine capable of finding any and all gifts, such things can't solve all our problems, especially when it comes to human emotions.

Another great moment comes at the tail end of the video. There's a montage of a bunch of happy couples together. There's a spaceman and an alien; a princess and a frog; a dog and cat; a bookish pair; a cookie and a carton of milk; and two men wearing tuxedoes and holding hands, which I took to imply that they're a gay couple getting married.

Perfect timing, too. Yesterday, Washington state legalized gay marriage -- possibly with the help of a letter to the governor from Microsoft and five other tech companies -- and the New Jersey Senate also voted in favor of allowing same-sex marriages, though the bill has some challenges ahead.

That Google would tip a hat to gay marriage shouldn't come as a surprise -- Google is a very vocal supporter of gay rights. But even if you didn't see what I saw, it's heartening to watch a Valentine's Day message about all different kinds of love … that isn't also soaked with consumerism.

Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes.

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.
I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists.

Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience.

Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added.

Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments.

"Reality is complicated and messy," he told The Huffington Post in an email. "Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies."

But Nosek said less intelligent types might be attracted to liberal "simplifying ideologies" as well as conservative ones.

In any case, the study has taken the Internet by storm, with some outspoken liberals saying that it validates their suspicions about conservatives and conservatives arguing that the research has been misinterpreted.

Yesterday, the Obama administration announced a landmark full government strategy for advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in its foreign policy and called on nations around the world to recognize that “gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights.” The president issued a new directive ordering “all agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons” and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a 30 minute speech in Geneva, in which she announced a new $3 million Global Fund to support the work of civil society organizations working for equality around the world.

But you would have likely missed this story watching the nightly network news programs, CNN or Fox News, a ThinkProgress analysis of the media coverage finds. While MSNBC devoted four separate segments to the administration’s announcement — with ample coverage from Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell — and Fox News even included the story in Bret Baier’s Special Report, CNN, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, and the CBS Evening News ignored it entirely:

Now-former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain announced the suspension of his campaign today in a speech punctuated by a repeat recitation of Donna Summer’s “The Power of One” — a quote he acknowledged for the first time was plucked from Pokémon: The Movie 2000.

The decision to suspend his run for the nation’s highest office comes amid mounting allegations of sexual misconduct and extramarital affairs.

“I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction,” Cain told supporters in Atlanta. “Not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter.”

Prior to the announcement, Cain sent mixed signals about his intentions, arriving in Atlanta — hometown of his latest accuser, Ginger White — to attend the scheduled opening of a local campaign headquarters.

In his speech, Cain introduced a new website, which referred to as “Plan B,” through which he plans to “continue to be a voice for the people.”

The Guardian reporter Richard Adams points out that the significance of suspension versus withdrawal is not semantic: “Suspending his campaign…means Cain can still collect Federal matching funds in 2012.”

Liberals kvetch that Cain subtly trafficked in black stereotypes (for instance, by joking that he wanted his Secret Service name to be “Cornbread.”) But a strong segment of Cain’s support was from the tea party. And racists won’t vote for a black person. But bigots will.

Regardless of a candidate’s persona or message, a sex scandal for which there’s documentation is media catnip. Cain supporters and media critics see media bias at play and point to the coverage of the sexual transgressions of Bill Clinton and John Edwards. Clinton’s scandal unfurled long before the era of the three non-stop cable-news networks, blogs, Twitter and YouTube. There was no credible evidence against Edwards until after he left the campaign trail. And it’s not as if their scandals were ignored once they erupted.

Every candidate needs to examine his private life before deciding to run for office. If you’ve had documented sex-harassment charges leveled against you, or you’ve phoned and texted an alleged mistress at all hours (as early as 4:26 a.m.), it will come out.

Also saying that you would not hire a Muslim because you "don't trust them people". Well, your days in political office are limited. He declined to give detailed rebuttals to critics of his 9-9-9 tax plan. And he refused to bone on up basics of foreign policy, from the Cuban Adjustment Act to China’s nuclear stockpile.

If you have 90 minutes to spare. Stephen Colbert – mostly out of character – interviewed Neil DeGrasse Tyson back in 2010, The audio at the beginning is horrible. They do fix it and what is being said becomes clear. So please don't give up watching this. Turn up the volume and annoy your neighbors. They will learn something and thank you. Everything you need to know in life is delivered to you in 90 minutes. What a deal.

Colbert is the only person, I know of, that can challenge Tyson, as far as getting him to open up, and get him to speak out. If prodded correctly he just pours knowledge into empty minds. Q and A at end should have had more time. After the shock of learning so much in 90 minutes, the students started launching fire ball questions at him. Fourteen year olds thinking and formulation questions better that any adult that yields power.

Military Chaplains Refuse To Officiate Same Sex Weddings, but cereal murder is ok

Earlier this week, Addictinginfo reported that nearly 2,000 military chaplains have pledged not to officiate same sex weddings. This goes against the fact that same sex weddings are now legal in the armed forces due to the recent repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and the announcement by the White House that it will no longer enforce the Defense of Marriage Act. But chaplains are vowing to not perform wedding ceremonies for same sex couples, which essentially means they intend to continue the discriminatory policies that have recently been repealed. So the question is, should military chaplains be forced to officiate same sex weddings when a soldier requests it?

Military chaplains should indeed be forced to perform marriage services for homosexual soldiers. For nearly two decades, gay soldiers were forced to obey DADT or be discharged. Not one gay soldier was exempt from this policy, and they certainly weren’t allowed to use their religion or personal beliefs as an excuse for special privileges. These 2,000 chaplains and the anti-gay Republican Party are pushing for a ‘right of conscience’ clause that would basically re-legalize discrimination against gay soldiers. In other words, they want to put the Bible before the Constitution and US law.

CRAIGSLIST KILLINGS WAS A CHAPLIN
Ohio: Richard Beasley, 52, who worked as an unpaid chaplain, was arrested on Nov. 16, along with Brogan Rafferty, 16, for allegedly luring victims through a job advertisement that was posted on Craigslist seeking extra help working on an Ohio cattle farm.

Victims were told to bring all of their belongings, as they would also be living on the farm, which does not exist. Police said they believe robbery was the motive in the three murders and one attempted murder.

Earlier this week, Brogan’s mother, Yvette Rafferty told 19 Action News that the family had trusted 52 year old Richard Beasley enough to mentor their teenage son. But the recent events now unfolding are painting a disturbing picture of the man they called “Chaplin Rich”.

“I’ve known Rich since 2000. He was a friend of ours supposedly,” Ms. Rafferty said. ”Rich to me was Chaplin Rich Beasley. And a friend. A man of God. A man of God.”

The concerned mother had a chance to visit her son in the detention center, through the thick jail glass.

“He just looked like a scared kid,” she said. ”He said he knew nothing of what was going on.”

When police showed up at the Rafferty’s door in connection with the Craigslist job scam killings, the family was shocked. As authorities took the young man into custody, Yvette recalls, ”Me and his dad both we both explained to Brogan that he needs to tell the whole truth no matter what this is not snitching this is you know what is right.”

On a Facebook post, a friend of Brogan reveals a possible reason why the charged teen didn’t speak out about Beasley’s involvement in the shootings earlier, stating, “what would u do if someone threated to kill your family?”

According to reports, Beasley had served time for several crimes before becoming a “man of God”. In the 80′s and 90′s, he spent a total of 15 years in jail, for 3 separate charges. Around 2003. Beasley started a halfway house in Akron, and Ohio.com reports that he even testified before judges, testifying of behalf of those in his care. The police, however, claim that the house may have been used as a front for prostitution.

Most military's chaplains only work with men and women of their faith group but in many cases chaplains work with military personnel of all faiths, as well as those who claim no faith or religious affiliation. While most military chaplains represent a religion or faith group, some countries, like the Netherlands, also employ humanist chaplains who offer a non-religious approach to chaplain support. Some groups such as the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, support the idea of such humanist chaplains in the military, and also work to make all chaplains more sensitive to the needs and rights of those who profess no belief in a god. Others advocate for secular chaplains who have no faith identification but who do have the professional qualifications for the counseling and advisory responsibilities of chaplains.

Numerous complaints have been waged against Chaplains for mandatory prayers, coercion, and using government money to promote Evangelical Christianity. Atheists, whose religious position would not be represented by references to a generic God or the amorphic "spiritual fitness" initiatives in the Army, have created groups to ensure the separation of Church and State in the military. Moreover, groups representing atheists have even pushed for the appointment of one of their own to the chaplaincy.

Teen Mania Ministries is an Evangelical Christian youth organization located in Garden Valley, Texas. Teen Mania focuses primarily on four key programs, with a few additional smaller endeavours.

Its primary program includes the Battle Cry Campaign and "Acquire the Fire" events, described by one writer as "a mix of pep rally, rock concert and church service," that are held in over 30 cities across the United States and Canada each year. The ministry focuses much of its energy towards its domestic and overseas mission trips, operated under the title "Global Expeditions". Teen Mania also operates a one-year-long residential leadership training program on its campus, titled the Honor Academy, aimed towards high school graduates, and college students. Teen Mania's media branch of the organization works as a separate unit, titled the "Center for Creative Media", which provides a two-year internship for students desiring to work in live events, new media, television, and audio fields of the media industry.

The ministry has faced criticism for its use of overtly militaristic symbolism, as well as techniques that have been compared as similar to military training.

In September 2010, local Texas news station KLTV reported a three-part story on the Honor Academy's optional "ESOAL" retreat (an acronym for the "Emotionally Stretching Opportunity of a Lifetime"). The yearly 48 to 90 hour event would test participants with extreme exercise, sleep deprivation, unpleasant food and other military training techniques in order to "stretch" participants "emotionally and physically." Some interns who participated in the event describe it as abusive and authoritarian, questioning the spiritual value of activities like rolling down a hill repeatedly. Injuries including cuts, bruises, infections, sprains, dislocations, and exposure were reported by an area doctor, raising concerns about the event's safety.

The preacher who gained national attention for claiming the world would end — then repeatedly turned out to be wrong — says he finds it all rather "embarrassing." He is retiring.

Harold Camping offered up the mea culpa of sorts in an audio file posted to his Family Radio website on Monday.

"We're living in a day when one problem follows another, and when it comes trying to recognize the truth of prophecy we're finding it very, very difficult," the 89-year-old said.

His speech was slow and slurred. Camping suffered a stroke back in June.

Camping has made several predictions about the end of the world over the years. He claimed the end was nigh in 1994, then again in May of this year. When that didn’t happen, he said it would be Oct. 21.

"Why didn't Christ return on Oct. 21?" he asked. "It seems embarrassing for Family Radio, but God is in charge of everything."

He might not know when the end is, he' still keeping all the money. He might be bonkers but he ain't insane.

Out of my three blogs, this one is always a little dark. LGBT issues, laws, and religions foolishness abound here. I try to place a few fun stories here. to lighten the mood. But I find, even for myself, it depressing to post here. So many people filled with hate. So many people profit from hate. My other two blog are a relief and get more of my attention.

Bobby Montoya often dresses like a girl, plays with girl's toys, and most recently, wants to become a Girl Scout. But when her mother, Felisha Archuleta, brought her to a local troop leader, the child's dreams were dashed.
(This is the second time Bobby has been on my blog. I can't find the first story. Im not very good at tagging correctly.)
7-year-old Bobby wants what most little girls want: Dolls, My Little Pony figures and to join the Girl Scouts. But there’s one problem: Bobby's a boy. He said he wants to follow his sister in joining the group, but when a troop leader said it wouldn’t work out, the rejection left him devastated.

"Bobby identifies as a girl, and he's a boy," Felisha Archuleta, Bobby's mom, said. "He's been doing this since he was about 2 years old. He's loved girl stuff, so we just let him dress how he wants, as long as he's happy."

Bobby is happy most of the time. But he says, sometimes in school, being a boy and dressing like a girl occasionally is tough. He's been bullied.

"It's hurting my heart," Bobby said. "It hurts me and my mom both."

Recently, Archuleta wanted to sign Bobby up for Girl Scouts. His older sister did it, and Bobby really wanted to join. Archuleta told our sister station KUSA 9NEWS when she brought Bobby to register, a troop leader told her Bobby couldn't join.

Ms Archuleta said she was told by a troop leader that 'It doesn't matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can't be in Girl Scouts.'

The troop leader added that she didn’t want to get into trouble by parents or her Girl Scouts supervisor.

But today, the Girl Scouts of Colorado said it made a mistake when it rejected Bobby’s application to join.
"It was like somebody told me I can't like girl stuff, and I have to change my name to something else," Bobby said.

Girl Scouts of Colorado did a turn around released this statement:

"Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout. Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them. In this case, an associate delivering our program was not aware of our approach. She contacted her supervisor, who immediately began working with the family to get the child involved and supported in Girl Scouts. We are accelerating our support systems and training so that we're better able to serve all girls, families and volunteers."

In recommending the vaccine for boys and men, experts cited evidence of the vaccine's protective effect, as well as rising rates of HPV-associated anal and throat cancers in men (McKay, Wall Street Journal, 10/26). Vaccination of men also helps protect their female sex partners, the advisory panel said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices at CDC voted 13-0 to recommend that boys and young men receive vaccinations against the human papillomavirus, the New York Times reports (Harris, New York Times, 10/25).

Vote Details
With one committee member abstaining, the panel recommended routine vaccination of boys at age 11 or 12, though boys may receive the shot as early as age nine. The panel also voted 8-5 to recommend that boys and young men ages 13 to 21 who have not have had the shot received a "catch-up" vaccination (Stein, Washington Post, 10/25).

Health officials also encourage vaccination at a young age because, gosh darn it, those boys go down faster than a hooker from Singapore. Bless their little cherry ass's.

According to Starbucks’ sustainability director Jim Hanna, the coffeehouse chain may soon be unable to sell its principal product due to the detrimental impact of climate change on coffee bean production.

“What we are really seeing as a company as we look 10, 20, 30 years down the road – if conditions continue as they are – is a potentially significant risk to our supply chain, which is the Arabica coffee bean,” Hanna told the Guardian in a phone interview.

Hanna is set to speak before members of Congress today on the issue of climate change and how it’s real and how someone should do something about it before we run out of coffee and chocolate and a whole bunch of other foodstuffs “many people can’t live without.”

Starbucks has already put Plan B in motion, announcing yesterday it plans to enter the juice-bar market — news that freaked out Jamba Juice stockholders, causing the price of JMBA to drop 3.5%.

Today’s congressional event is sponsored by the Union of Concerned Scientists, which recently reported that coffee brands have increased the cost of grinds by as much as 25% over the last year.

“The dwindling supply of coffee is but one example of the many impacts to come due to climate change,” the nonprofit writes, ” and should be a wake-up call for us all.”

Costa Rican coffee officials said Monday that the country's coffee harvest is going slightly better than expected, and that Costa Rica will likely produce 1.57 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee during the 2012 season, up from the previous estimate of 1.56 million.

Coffee production for the season through Feb. 28 is expected to total 1.54 million bags, up 7% from the same period last year, according to the Costa Rican Coffee Institute.

The increase in coffee production is due largely to high coffee prices that have enabled producers to invest in better agricultural practices, such as the use of good fertilizer, officials said.

Costa Rica is the third-largest coffee producer in Central America, where increased output this season is expected to provide some relief for tight global supplies and surging international prices.

Production from the current harvest will still be below initial expectations of 1.69 million bags, however. Excessive rainfall early in the season stripped plants of berries and caused more outbreaks of fungal diseases than normal.

California Transgender Gender Nondiscrimination Act

California always leads the country in the right thing to do.

California Governor Jerry Brown, yesterday signed not one but two historic transgender bills into law.

The first, Assembly Bill 433, the Vital Statistics Modernization Act, makes the process for Californians to obtain and update birth certificates (and other identifying documentation) easier. Now, trans people must only provide medical documentation from an attending physician to prove that they have undergone “clinically apropriate treatment.”

The second bill, Assembly Bill 887, also known as the Gender Nondiscrimination Act, bulks up employment, housing and other civil rights protections for all Californians, but especially for trans people. The law notes: “While California anti-discrimination laws already define ‘gender’ to include a person’s gender identity and gender expression, the Gender Nondiscrimination Act provides clarity to those who are victims of unlawful discrimination as well as for business owners, employers and other entities required to comply with the anti-discrimination protections by explicitly enumerating gender identity and expression as protected categories in a number of state codes.”

Gays in America are not the only group of people fighting for their rights.

In 2007, more than three-quarters of Cherokee citizens voted to kick out descendants of black freedmen and other non-Indians. The dispute has been in and out of the courts ever since. The federal government stepped in and halted the action. Loss of citizenship could also mean losing valuable tribal benefits such as medical care, housing assistance and grocery stipends.

Five members of what America recognizes as “Civilized Tribes” which are Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw Freedmen, Creek, and Seminole enslaved Blacks during Colonial America.

This part is very contradictory in terms because America labeled the Indians “civilized” since they signed peace treaties with the government after the Army killed off all their buffalo [food supply], practically massacred every Tribe they encountered, committed mass destruction by infecting Tribes with the Smallpox virus and finally removed them from Indian territory during the infamous “Trail of Tears”.

The Indians had no other recourse than to submit to the white man’s demands after being nearly exterminated from off the face of the earth!

It’s the other Indian Tribes that still fought against oppression that America calls uncivilized – go figure? Remember the Indians or rather the native inhabitants were already here when the Europeans stole, enslaved Africans and brought blacks to America? When the Africans escaped and fled into the wilderness they connected with the native inhabitants who provided refuge for black slaves.

Now the white man had already made acquaintance with the native inhabitants and taught many of them the European traditions that included slavery. Europeans and native Inhabitants owned African slaves and they did the same thing – had sex with the slaves, which resulted in offspring.

So the Black population is extremely diverse – we have Black Cubans, Asians, French, Dutch, Spaniards, Dominicans and the list goes on forever, because these countries dealt in the African slave trade.

The government paid the native inhabitants to track down the escaped Africans. At the same time the government was at war with the other native inhabitants and used the Black man to hunt down the native inhabitants that did not want to incorporate into the USA.

The saga continues with the civil war where both the native inhabitants and Blacks fought for both the Union and the confederate. After the civil war the Army used Blacks to fight against the native inhabitants and their military units became known as the “Buffalo Soldiers”.

Astoundingly confusing?

Voting is under way in the tribal election for chief, with the final ballots to be cast Saturday. The two candidates have battled for months over almost every aspect of the tribal government. But they find common ground on the freedmen issue: Both want them removed.

Tribal leaders say it is their right as a sovereign nation to determine who qualifies to be a citizen.

“I have considered the Cherokee Nation’s right to determine their own national identity the most fundamental right of every government,” said Chad Smith, the incumbent chief, who is being challenged by longtime tribal councilman Bill John Baker.

The descendants say being Cherokee has always been part of their family stories, even if they were not actively involved with the tribe after their relatives were released.

In deciding a person’s identify, the tribe relies on a historical record called the Dawes Rolls, which was created by the federal government between 1898 and 1906 to identify citizens of the Cherokee Nation — and members of other tribes — who were living in Indian territory.

The roll has two parts. The first, called the Cherokees-by-Blood Roll, identified about 32,000 citizens of the nation who could prove direct Indian ancestry. The second, known as the Freedmen Roll, identified about 5,000 freedmen citizens of the nation, typically black former slaves and their descendants owned by Cherokee tribesmen.

The freedmen families have argued that the Treaty of 1866, signed decades before the Dawes Rolls were written, takes precedent. That treaty between the U.S. government and the Cherokees gave the freedmen and their descendants “all the rights of native Cherokees.”

Until a court rules otherwise, the Cherokee Nation is still offering medical care to descendants of freedmen. Of the $300 million the tribe budgets for health care, medical services for the descendants cost about 1 percent, or $3 million, a tribal spokesman said.

August 22, the Cherokee tribe was forced to restore voting and benefit rights to thousands of black slave descendants after controversially revoking them last month .

The decision at the time was labelled a form of "racism and apartheid in the 21st Century" by Freedman leader and plaintiff, Marilyn Vann, and later forced the federal government to take action.
Having just won the right to vote in a special election for a principal chief, descendants of Black slaves may have lost a little hope on last Friday when a federal judge dismissed one of two of their lawsuits.

U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy ruled that the Treaty of 1866 gave 2,800 descendants of slaves once owned by the Nation, or so-called freedmen, “all the rights of native Cherokees,” including free health care and educational concessions. The judge decided that the tribe was immune to a lawsuit in a federal court, because it had never waived its sovereignty under the treaty.

The second lawsuit, initiated by the Cherokees, argued that federal statutes modified the 1866 treaty in a way that no longer provided the freedmen rights to tribal citizenship. Judge Kennedy transferred the case back to federal court in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it was originally filed.

Jon Velie, an attorney representing the descendants, said that he was disappointed with the ruling but that the fight is not over.

"It's a technical ruling. It didn't determine whether the treaty was valid or whether the freedmen were or were not citizens".

Crystal Cathedral fails to raise funds

Crystal Cathedral administrators, who announced a “faith filled” decision in July to raise $50 million to try to pay off its debt and maintain ownership of the church, have reportedly fallen short in their fundraising efforts.
It was reported Friday by that the Schullers have failed to raise even half the funds needed to prevent the church from being sold.
The Orange County Register discovered in court papers filed last week that the congregation has only collected $4,737 in their Miracle Faith Offering drive, a far cry from the $50 million owed in debts.
There is also problems inside the church family.

Crystal Cathedral founder Robert H. Schuller on Tuesday disputed allegations in a lawsuit filed by the church's creditors' committee, and said that the ministry's executive board has always acted in "good faith" regarding the best interests of the church.

"This lawsuit makes serious and untrue allegations regarding myself and my family," Schuller said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that I will have to defend this lawsuit only to prove what is true."

The lawsuit is seeking to pay church insiders -- including Schuller, his wife, Arvella, daughters Carol and Jeanne and their husbands, son Robert Anthony and his wife -- last upon the sale of the Garden Grove campus. It also includes former Chief Financial Officer Fred Southard, who resigned in January.

Court documents allege that, before filing for Chapter 11 almost one year ago, church officials borrowed about $10 million from an endowment fund from 2002 to 2009. It also outlines various agreements between family members and the church, which include a contract regarding Robert H. Schuller entitling him to a $300,000 annual discretionary fund plus health insurance and travel staff for the rest of his life.

Harold Camping, who predicted that 200 million Christians would be taken to heaven on May 21st, said that he felt so terrible when his doomsday message did not come true that he left home and took refuge in a motel with his wife. His independent ministry, Family Radio International, spent millions — some of it from donations made by followers — on more than 5,000 billboards and 20 recreational vehicles plastered with the Judgment Day message.

"I am utterly absolutely, absolutely convinced it's going to happen," said Camping.

It is not the first time Camping was mistaken about the end of the world. He once predicted the End of Days to be Sept. 6, 1994, but later said that date was a result of a mathematical error.

Harold Camping revised his apocalyptic prophecy, saying he was off by five months and the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 21.

A quick trip to his homeland to bolster the masses fails.

Pope Benedict XVI called for Christians to unite behind the idea that marriage is between one man and one woman during a visit to Germany.

He described the Catholic Church's beliefs as facing a number of threats, and he included same-sex marriage on the list.

The pope appears to be interested in uniting faiths behind some commonalities in belief. He even visited the monastery where Martin Luther, who split devotees away from the church, once studied. Then the pope met with Muslim leaders and suggested that marriage might be among those areas where their religious interests are in common.

Pope Benedict held an open air mass for some 30000 in Erfurt, Germany, following a security scare, when shots were reportedly fired. Sunita Rappai reports.

As in Madrid, Pope Benedict's visit was also marked by protest, with the AP reporting that 9,000 were in the streets of downtown Berlin on Thursday protesting against the pope.

Richard David Precht, a best-selling German author on philosophical issues, said the lukewarm reception in Germany, which had taken great pride in his 2005 election, was symptomatic of a Western trend.

"The fate of the Catholic Church in the next few years and decades is not looking very positive or euphoric and I don't think the Pope's visit is likely to stop the decline of Catholicism in Germany," he told ZDF public television.

"I think we will continue to see falling numbers of Catholics unless we experience a major economic downturn."

The Obama administration’s prosecution of Dan Choi for chaining himself to the White House fence in protest of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, had been temporarily suspended after Judge Facciola made a preliminary ruling that there was enough evidence to allow for Choi’s attorneys to argue that he was a victim of “selective” or “vindictive” prosecution. Defense Attorney Norman Kent has said the decision to persecute Choi and others “may go all the way to the White House.” Obama’s DoJ has since filed a rare Writ of Mandamus to prevent the judge from allowing Choi’s attorneys to pursue a vindictive prosecution defense. Another of Choi’s attorneys, Robert J. Feldman, filed their response to the petition for a Writ of Mandumus on Wednesday, and a short time later (surprise, surprise), the Secret Service released emails showing that it was indeed the White House that had tipped them off about the protest – before it even happened!

In their response, Choi’s attorney, Robert J. Feldman, argues that the elements for filing a Writ of Mandamus have not been met and that the government has “dirty hands.” The Mandumus Writ should be rejected over their persecution of Dan Choi, by prosecuting him separately from the other protesters, failing to prepare adequately for the case, and for withholding material which it had a duty to disclose that would’ve helped Choi’s defense strategy. Feldman also made a prediction for the future of this case: “We will permit the government a reasonable time to reply if they wish. And when they lose this Mandamus, one of three things will happen: Dan Choi will be acquitted, the charges against Dan Choi will be dismissed, or – the most preferable of all – the trial will continue, and the United States vs. Choi will become Choi vs. The United States, de facto. There wasn’t a lot of fanfare from the Pentagon when DADT officially ended on Tuesday; no speeches, no ceremony, no celebration. There was, however, a Marine recruiting table down at the gay community center in Tulsa on Tuesday morning. The Day after the end of DADT. After years of protestation that openly gay soldiers would be a detriment to our nation’s military capabilities, with the Marines often cited as the repeal’s most vocal opponents, Master Sgt. Anthony Henry and Staff Sgt. Chris Cano headed down to the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center with a table and a chinup bar to look for recruits.

They were there at the request of the the center’s executive director, Toby Jenkins, who actually called to ask if it would be possible to have recruiters available on the day DADT was finally over.

“If we’ve been fighting for 15 years for the right to be in the military, we said, ‘Let’s just ask military recruiters if they’d be available,’ ” he said. “But no one was prepared for that question. It was like I was talking to people like they were deer in the headlights.”
The Marines did in fact think that Mr. Jenkins’s invitation might be a hoax, so they checked him out and talked to their superiors, who talked to their superiors. Then they took a deep breath and decided to go.

Master Sgt. Anthony Henry, a top Marine recruiting trainer for the southwestern United States, pulled up to Tulsa’s biggest gay community center on Tuesday morning and left his Chevy where he could make a fast getaway. “I have an exit strategy,” he said. “I know where my choke points are, I’ve strategically parked my car right on the curbside, I have an out.”

But as it happened, one of the strangest days in the history of the United States Marine Corps unfolded without the protests and insults that Sergeant Henry had feared. Sergeant Henry, who had been invited to set up a recruiting booth on the first day of the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell” at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center in downtown Tulsa, instead spent it in quiet conversation with a trickle of gay women who came in to ask about joining the Marines.

From what the NYT reports, most of the people stopping by the recruiting table were women — most of the gay-panic narrative around DADT centers on gay men. Most of the people stopping by the recruiting table, maybe all of them, won’t be allowed to enlist. Not because they’re gay; only 1 out of every 10 applicants of every sexual orientation qualify for service, and reasons for rejection include but are not limited to “excessive tattoos.” The Marines at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center didn’t recruit anyone on Tuesday. But they’re going to try again.

Military service is an option disproportionately taken advantage of by people who are economically and/or educationally disadvantaged, who are of color, who are marginalized, who for a lot of reasons may not have a lot of other choices. Until now, queer people — who are often economically and educationally disadvantaged, who are of color, who are marginalized, who often don’t have the choices that straight people do — haven’t been able to take this opportunity. At least not openly, not without hiding a huge portion of their lives, without acknowledging all of who they were and are up to this moment. It’s a small thing, objectively speaking, in one gay community center in Tulsa. It’s a huge thing, in a lot of ways, this one thing in Tulsa. For a lot of people, the repeal of DADT has been a fairly divisive issue; for those especially who oppose America’s current wars or the concept of war, it was difficult to support a model of queer equality centered around a repeal of DADT. But this is what it looks like, regardless of how you feel about the larger issues inferred by military service. This is what has finally come to pass:

In a letter to the editor published Aug. 13 in the Chronicle, she warned the thieves who stole her 2-foot, roughly 50-pound terra cotta statue of St. Francis to watch their karma.

Maybe whoever stole St. Francis read the letter and was a little worried, or maybe returning him was the plan all along.

Either way, Saturday morning, St. Francis reappeared in exactly the same spot from where he was taken from their Sourdough Road home. But he's not unscathed.

A new paint job gives him glittering green robes, gold sandals and a purple rope belt.

"I call it shock and awful," Paul said.

St. Francis also has new eyebrows, rouge on his cheeks, green sparkle eye shadow to match his robes and yellow finger and toenail polish. His bird friends, once muted terra cotta, are now a brilliant blue and canary yellow.

"I said in the letter St. Francis was not a sissy," Paul joked. "Now he is."

When Paul's husband, Harold, called her outside to see St. Francis' new getup, she said they both collapsed in laughter.

"I laughed so hard I cried," she said. "I was just cracked up the whole day."

Texas Western Bar Tosses Out Lesbains

"We're a Western Bar, not a gay bar", said the employee.

Three women say they were kicked out of a bar in Victoria, Texas, because of their sexual orientation. The women claim an employee asked them to leave the Cactus Canyon on Aug. 24 and told them, “This is a country western bar, not a gay bar.” The Victoria Advocate reports:

I got kicked out of Cactus for no reason,” Victoria resident Estefana Diaz said. “We were holding hands — that’s it.”

One of Cactus Canyon’s owners, Roger Gearheart, of Odessa, denied the women were asked to leave because of their sexual orientation.

“Those people weren’t kicked out because they’re gay. They acted inappropriately to each other,” Gearheart said.

“We don’t discriminate.”

He also said he wanted to be clear his bar does not discriminate and the women could return as long as their behavior is appropriate.

Gearheart was not in the bar at the time, but stands behind his employee’s decision that the women’s behavior was not in good taste.

“No one wants to see that whether you’re gay or straight” he said.

When the women called police to file a complaint they were told the bar has the right to refuse service. There is no state or federal law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations. The women say they may boycott the Cactus Canyon.

But is not being told to correct and keep in check who you are a form of discrimination? Sit at the table. Don't make eye contact. Do not dance together. Allow strait men, that smell like horse shit, to buy you drinks and touch your ass.

LGBT Youth Home opened by Cindy Lauper

The idea behind the 30-bed facility, which is on W. 154th St. near Frederick Douglass Blvd, was conceived by Lauper, her manager and the West End Intergenerational Residence, a non-profit that provides housing and support for homeless families and seniors.

The True Colors Residence will be the first permanent housing facility in New York for homeless L.G.B.T. youth.

The 2010 census results report counts of same-sex partners and same-sex spouses, regardless of whether same-sex marriage is legal in their states.

Headlines from across the country reveal common themes: There are more people who identify as gay, and they've dispersed to more places.

In New Jersey, "Number of gay couples ... rises sharply."

In South Carolina, "Family makeup is changing."

In Iowa, "Same-sex households up 77%."

In Provincetown, Massachusetts: "America's Gayest City." (who didn't know that?)

The U.S. Census Bureau has been releasing the state data since June, along with information about how many children are being raised in same-sex parent households. National figures will be released in November.
State numbers reveal about a 50% increase in same-sex couples since 2000, with some of the biggest increases in traditionally conservative parts of the country, said demographer Gary Gates of UCLA Law School's Williams Institute, a think tank dedicated to sexual orientation and gender-related law and public policy.

The increase isn't because of a surge of gay people coupling in the last decade, Gates said. Rather, growing social acceptance of homosexuality has led to a greater willingness to report it.

I have lived in #2 and #10. They are right next to each other. The rich sisters live in #2 and the poor Mary's live in #10. That should read 195.1 for that area. Far over pop(fag)ulating P-town. The demographic for the Broward County (the location of both FL gay locations) was 23% of the population was LGBT. That numbered out to 367,000 people. I have visited #1 P-town. If their numbers are right, that 163000 gays, doesn't come close to Broward. Provincetown is the size of a postage stamp. I have never met a straight person there. Percentage numbers (concentration) would support this #1.

The numbers also show the proportion of same-sex couples raising children hasn't changed much since 2000, he said, despite increasing numbers of adoptions.

Gates' explanation: Fewer couples are raising children from previous heterosexual relationships.
"That form of parenting is on the decline," he said. "With greater social acceptance, people are coming out earlier in life and they're less likely to have children."

But some argue the census didn't go far enough to collect data on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.

No question in the 2010 census asked "Are you lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?" and no results share the total number of LGBT people in the United States.

Rather, the census counted people of the same sex who live together and checked the boxes for "husband and wife" or "unmarried partner." The results are based on how people identify themselves, even if they live in states where same-sex marriages aren't legally recognized.

"The country is involved in a very important policy debate about extending rights and responsibilities to gay Americans and in the context of that debate, it is important to know how many people we're talking about," he said.

Others have attempted to estimate -- not count -- the country's LGBT population, but any count can be hampered by survey methodology and willingness to respond. The Williams Institute estimated that more than 8 million adults in the United States are lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and nearly 700,000 are transgender. A study released in April suggested that nearly 9 million Americans, about the population of New Jersey, identify as LGBT.

Williams Institute research has also found that about 50,000 same-sex couples have married, based on administrative data on the number of couples who have legally married in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire. Another 85,000 same-sex couples have entered into civil unions or domestic partnerships in Vermont, California, New Jersey, Oregon, New Hampshire, Washington and Nevada, according to the Williams Institute.

Averaging measures of same-sex sexual behavior yields an estimate of nearly 19 million Americans (8.2%) who have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior.

Behavior? NSFG data only survey 18-44 year olds, this estimate assumes that patterns in this group are the same for those aged 45 and older. The average troll in Wilton Manors bars is over 60 years of age. They have more "behaviors" than the 18 year olds. Be warned.

Official government LGBT numbers are due this November. The United Way of Broward County, Florida, launched its own web-based survey in 2009 with the goal of assessing the needs of the "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning" community. "The Count" asks basic demographic questions -- race, ethnicity and age -- but also tries to take the pulse of the community and identify problems.

Openly Gay Mormon Church Leader? Well, Pluck a Duck.

Late Sunday, news came across the Mormon grapevine: an openly gay Mormon man named Mitch Mayne had been asked (or “called,” in Mormon parlance) to serve as a leader in an LDS congregation in San Francisco.

Before receiving his call to serve in San Francisco, Mayne had been attending an LDS congregation in Oakland, where Mormons have been especially active in efforts to repair damage to interfaith and LDS-LGBT relations since the LDS Church’s heavy involvement in California’s 2008 Proposition 8 campaign. That added an amendment to the California constitution banning gay marriage. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encouraged members to donate money and time to aggressively pushing the passage of Proposition 8. The measure overturned a California Supreme Court ruling earlier that legalized gay marriage within the state, allowing thousands of gay couples to marry.

Mayne was also in a committed, monogamous relationship with his male partner. About a year ago, Mayne decided to end his relationship, for reasons not related to religion. It was, he said, the hardest thing he ever did: harder, even, than burying his parents.

Bishop Don Fletcher of the San Francisco Bay Ward asked him to serve as ward executive secretary, a leadership position that serves with the ward lay-pastoral leadership (or “bishopric,” in Mormon terms) to coordinate congregational administrative and pastoral functions and to participate in congregational executive-level decision-making as well.

“I was floored,” says Mayne. “I told him: ‘My entire life I’ve known I was gay. Why would I have lived my life to be worthy of serving a bishopric-level calling? A calling that as I gay man I’ve been told I was not entitled to? I am a three-dimensional person.’”

There is, in fact, no consensus Mormon view on homosexuality. While most Mormons view homosexual sexual activity as a sin, Church leaders have expressed divergent perspectives on LGBT issues, ranging from condemnatory and derisive to ameliorative and compassionate.

In the past, LDS Church leaders have endorsed conversion therapies, or encouraged gay Mormons enter heterosexual marriages. Some have declined to use the terms “gay and lesbian” and instead have used the words “same sex attraction” in order to make the case that homosexuality is not an inherent and lasting feature of personhood. Consequently, many conservative Mormons continue to believe that sexual orientation is changeable, a gravely sinful “lifestyle” choice to be simply rejected, or a condition to be “struggled” with and overcome, like alcoholism.

Liberal Mormons tend to view homosexuality as a naturally-occurring human trait that is not abhorrent to God. Some congregations welcome participation by openly gay people who maintain chastity. Other Mormons, however, feel that it is unjust and impossible to expect gay Mormons to abstain from intimate relationships their entire lifetimes.

Homosexual acts (sex) are prohibited by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Law of Chastity, as well as other sexual acts outside the bonds of marriage. Violating the Law of Chastity may result in excommunication. Members of the church who self-identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual may remain in good standing in the Church if they abstain from homosexual relations and heterosexual relations outside of marriage. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints permits all people to attend its local Sunday services. Acquiring and maintaining membership in the church, and receiving a temple recommend, is dependent upon the personal observance of its teachings,including the law of chastity.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints historically taught that the practice of homosexuality, meaning sexual behavior with someone of the same sex, was a choice or curable mental illness. Recent leadership has indicated that it may not be a conscious choice and that it may be treatable. The church teaches that regardless of the cause of homosexual orientation, one can and must avoid homosexual relations.

This is the same (sic) view the Catholic Church has. Only married couples can have sex. If gays are not allowed to marry, they can not have sex. But they can come to church and put money in the collection plate.

As heartening as this kind of reaction to his new calling has been, Mayne also finds it quite daunting to be among the first if not the first openly gay LDS man called to serve in a congregational leadership capacity in the post-Proposition 8 era.

“I’m just Mitch Mayne,” “I’m not anyone’s savior. I’m not a spokesman for the LDS Church. I don’t set doctrine. I’m sure as heck (Mormon speak for Hell) not Joseph Smith or Harvey Milk. I’m just here and available to serve. And that’s what’s exciting. By serving my Mormon community, I get to serve my Savior, Jesus Christ, and I love Him so much.”

Randy Potts Came Out and was Cast Out

Randy Potts, attended the funeral of his grandfather, Oral Roberts, but wasn’t invited to sit with family. A familiar gay right of passage. Left outside while the rest sit inside with backs turned. The story could have ended here. But Randy moved on and is making a difference.

Yes, the one and only Christian leader Oral Roberts had two gay children in his family. His love for them over came everything. All Oral Roberts could see was love. But he also saw pain and fear.

Roberts, who died last year, had four children: Potts’ mother, a Tulsa attorney; her sister, who died in a plane crash with her husband in 1977; Ronnie Roberts, who committed suicide in 1982; and Richard Roberts, who became president of Oral Roberts University in 1993 but resigned in 2007 after being accused of using school funds for personal and political purposes. An 8 million dollar accusation.

Potts identifies most closely with his deceased uncle, Ronnie. They look alike. They were both teachers. They married, had children and divorced at about the same age. “We married very similar women, too,” Potts said.

They were also about the same age when they came out. But there is a major difference between the two.
Ronnie came out as gay to the Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, in the early 1980s. Six months later, Ronnie Roberts committed suicide. Potts, on the other hand, learned to embrace his identity.

Potts said he believes people need to take responsibility for their own lives. If their families aren’t supportive, they need to surround themselves with people who are. That is what made the difference for him.
But the times were different as well, for Potts and his uncle.

His estrangement from his family began much earlier.

He compared his mother to Sarah Palin.

“She reminds me a lot of my mother,” he said of Palin. “I hear my mother in her, the same sort of mindset.”

Levin is a vocal religious conservative and opposes gay rights and abortion.
Levin is also a member of the advisory committee of the organization Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation. Yehuda Levin tends to be in alliance with Christian Evangelicals on efforts opposed to homosexual rights and other social issues. This led to his 1996 support for Pat Buchanan. A hateful pair that duo makes.

Levin has run for public office numerous times and failed. He ran for Congress in 1984 on the Republican ticket, for mayor of New York City in 1985 on the Right to Life ticket, and for New York City Council in 1991 and 1993 on the Conservative ticket. He was unsuccessful in each of these elections.
Levin was involved in stopping a event from taking place in Jerusalem.
He apparently supported the use of violence by protesters in opposing the planned event saying "I promise that there's going to be bloodshed".

In October 2010, Levin worked with Carl Paladino and prepared an anti-gay statement which Paladino read in part in the Orthodox Jewish community, which made national news. Paladino later apologized for that statement causing Levin to withdraw his support from Paladino.

Levin is often noted in popular culture for his strong anti-gay statements. Most notably his statement blaming the 2010 Haiti earthquake on the presence of homosexuals in the military.

A Southern Baptist seminary president says debate among evangelicals over whether Adam and Eve were real people is not just about different interpretations of a few verses in Genesis but rather a matter of “gospel urgency.”

Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary published a blog Aug. 22 about his recent appearance on National Public Radio where he debated evangelical scholars saying science doesn’t support a literal reading of Genesis.

Appearing with Mohler Aug. 9 on NPR’s “Morning Edition," Dennis Venema, a professor of biology at Trinity Western University, said mapping of the human genome proves that people evolved over a long period of time and cannot be traced back to a single couple within the last few thousand years.

John Schneider, a former professor at Calvin College forced to resign after 25 years for writing an article questioning the historical Adam, said it is time for Christians to “reformulate some of their tradition about human beginnings.”

Mohler, who has long argued that the most natural reading of Genesis is that God created the world in six 24-hour days, said in his blog that if such arguments hold sway, “we will have to come up with an entirely new understanding of the gospel metanarrative and the Bible’s storyline.”

The debate between young- and old-earth creationists spilled into a new audience Aug. 17 when Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert described Mohler as a “real Christian” who understands what is at stake while introducing an excerpt from the NPR broadcast.

“When Adam sinned, he sinned for us, and it’s that very sinfulness that sets up our understanding of our need for a savior,” Mohler said. “Without Adam, the work of Christ makes no sense whatsoever.”
Colbert, a comedian who parodies conservatives by pretending to agree with them, used an analogy of “how without ‘Happy Days,’ ‘Joanie Loves Chachi’ makes no sense” and quipped that if evangelical scientists are right, “I have been helping people and forgiving them for nothing.”

Mohler’s Aug. 22 blog treated the subject as anything but a laughing matter.

“Each generation of Christians faces its own set of theological challenges,” Mohler wrote. “For this generation of evangelicals, the question of beginnings is taking on a new urgency. In fact, this question is now a matter of gospel urgency. How are we to understand the Bible’s story, if we can have no confidence that we know how it even begins?”

Mohler, a graduate of Samford University with a Ph.D. in theology from Southern Seminary, has argued for a literal reading of the three chapters of Genesis. In 2005, Mohler rejected the idea of human “descent” in a Time magazine article. He has declared the theology of evolution “incompatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ” and argued the “exegetical and theological necessity” of affirming the universe is no more than several thousand years old and was created in six 24-hour days.

“The denial of an historical Adam and Eve as the first parents of all humanity and the solitary first human pair severs the link between Adam and Christ which is so crucial to the gospel,” Mohler wrote in his blog. “If we do not know how the story of the gospel begins, then we do not know what that story means. Make no mistake: a false start to the story produces a false grasp of the gospel.”

Fundamentalist Christians regularly give two significant reasons for accepting the story of Adam and Eve as historically and scientifically accurate. The first deals with the integrity of the Bible itself. If one element of the biblical story isn't historically accurate, the argument runs, then you can't trust any of it. I call this the "link chain" notion of biblical authority because, as with chains, the Bible is suddenly only as strong as its weakest link. Creation of the world in seven days? AH, Not really. Jonah in the belly of a whale for three days? No way. And Joshua stopping the sun in its tracks for one? Ha ha ha? Now for my next trick! Doubt any one of these stories, and the veracity of whole Bible, according to conservatives, vanishes into thin air.

The difficulty with this view is that the Bible never presents itself as a scientific or historical textbook. Rather, it is a collection of testimony, confessions of faith made by persons who had been so gripped by their experiences of God they had to share them using whatever literary and cultural devices were at hand. Poetry, metaphor, simile, myth, parable, story, advice, analogy -- all these and more are employed by biblical authors who were more poets than historians, more muses than scientists, and more interested in faithful persuasion than rational explanation.

There is something much deeper at stake in these arguments for those who defend a literal reading of the Bible. In its bluntest form, it goes like this: Lose confidence in Adam and you might as well give up on Jesus as well. Because if Genesis' account of Eden is mythic rather than historical, then how can you trust any of the Gospel reports about Jesus. Comparisons with Washington (who didn't chop down a cherry tree) and Revere (who didn't yell "the British are coming") and countless others we might offer fall short at this point, as we're not talking merely about the father of our country or a silversmith turned patriot. This is Jesus, after all, the One confessed by Christians to be the Son of God. And so here lies the great fear that gnaws at the heart of fundamentalism: How can I believe -- in the Bible, Jesus and God (probably in that order) -- unless I know for certain that all these things happened just as they were told?

I am seeking answers to the following questions:1.Who spent the Governor’s campaign money at La-Te-Da that day?

2.Is it normal from someone from the campaign to conduct a “business meeting” at a Key West, gay hotel and drag show venue? What was the nature of the meeting?

3.As I read Texas law, out-of state-travel is supposed to be designated by checking the box in the entry and completing an accompanying Schedule T form.

Can you provide to me the Schedule T form as originally filed? If not, can you please explain its absence?4.Where was Governor Perry when the money was spent on this “business meeting?”5.Could you provide me with the Governor’s schedule for two weeks before and after the date of the expenditure?6.On what did Governor Perry, or a representative of his campaign, spend $78.26 at the club – an admission ticket, alcohol or something else?

Friars' revenge: Florentine Franciscans are praying for diarrhoea

A group of Franciscan friars furious at the theft of bibles from their church in Florence have taken the unusual step of praying for the thief to be struck down by diarrhoea.

Friars at the 15th century church of San Salvatore al Monte, which was a favourite of Michelangelo, were irritated when a rare and expensive bible disappeared from the lectern, and they flew off the handle when a replacement bible donated by a worshipper also went missing and within a few hours.

In a note, pinned up in full view of worshippers, the friars say they hope the thief sees the error of his ways. But in case he does not, they add: "We pray to God that the thief is struck by a strong bout of the shits."
This turn of events will, they hope, "encourage him to carry out no further thefts".

Described by La Stampa newspaper as "the product of the Tuscan ability to be ironic about anything", the note and its unorthodox request will be forgiven, claim one of the friars. "It is not exactly clean language," the friar said, "but we couldn't put up with it any longer. The Lord and the faithful will understand."

The product's description on Renova's website calls them "streamers," yet they come in the same packaging as their toilet paper and can only be found in the toilet paper section of their site. Pope Visits Spain: Tells New Seminarians "Keep it in your pants"

My Italian Pope Speaking Spanish might be off on the translation, but that's the jest of it. The Catholic Church has been mired in scandal in recent years over disclosures that priests sexually abused children in many countries and that Church officials covered up the abuse.

Pope Benedict said Saturday Roman Catholic priests must live saintly lives and men should only enter the priesthood if they were convinced they could live by all the Church's rules, including celibacy.

On the third day of a visit that has been marked by protests, the pope celebrated Mass for some 4,500 seminarians training for the priesthood in Madrid's La Almudena cathedral.

"We have to be saints so as not to create a contradiction between the sign that we are and the reality that we wish to signify," he said in a sermon as part of activities of the Church's World Youth Day.
He said priests must understand their "decision to live in celibacy for the kingdom of heaven," adding that men should approach the priesthood only "if you are completely determined to exercise it in obedience to the Church's precepts."

The cost of the trip to the capital has angered some Spaniards struggling with recession and high unemployment. Heavy security has surrounded the pontiff, with roads cut off to traffic and thousands of police on the streets.

"There have been protests in the center every night over the Pope's visit, with people chanting 'the Pope's a Nazi' and such like. But since Wednesday when pilgrims were met with angry protests and there were injuries, the police have been out in droves," said 60-year-old Englishman Richard Hunter who lives in city center.
"The center is now a mixture of prostitutes and police."

Benedict's trip has also reignited criticism by Los Indignados (The Indignants), a group whose mainly young members occupied Madrid's Puerta del Sol square in May to protest against high unemployment and government spending cuts.

Gay activists in Madrid plan to stage an anti-Pope protest to defend same sex partnerships later Saturday while Benedict attends a prayer vigil with thousands of young people from around 190 countries in an aerodrome outside Madrid.
In 2005, Spain became the third country in the world to legalize gay marriage, a move the Church opposed.

And did you know that Rick Perry later passed laws to help porn companies like Movie Gallery, Inc., avoid 'tort suits' for illegally distributing porn across state lines?

Coincidentally, Rick Perry used similar language when signing the tort-reform bill that limited the liability—thereby increasing profits—of companies like Movie Gallery. Perry said the bill would “remov[e] the incentive for trial lawyers to file frivolous lawsuits.” Continuing Perry said, “we will save thousands of jobs, generate millions in new revenue to the state;” only some of those jobs come at the price of young girl’s physical and psychological health.

It's funny how politicians who claim to be all about family values end up subverting them. Rick Perry sure doesn't walk the walk and talk the talk as a so-called conservative Christian. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg that's Rick Perry's hypocrisy. There's more below the surface, and the national press is just beginning to see it.

A presidential candidate who invested in a porn company, while decrying porn, and claiming to value women while looking the other way in keeping the director of the Texas Film Commission in place who was found guilty of sexual harassment, is not the sort of candidate that independent and moderate voters will want in the White House.

Sometimes the comments posted by readers of LGBT newspapers provide a fascinating glimpse into the mindsets of our community’s greatest adversaries because they are often part of the audience.

One that caught my eye recently was posted by a reader who objected to criticism directed against Texas Gov. Rick Perry for agreeing to headline the annual dinner on Oct. 28 of the anti-gay group Cornerstone Action in New Hampshire. The engagement is seen as further evidence that Perry is leaning toward running for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2012 because New Hampshire is the first presidential primary state.

That put Perry on the LGBT community’s radar again because Cornerstone Action advocates the repeal of the state’s same-sex marriage law, and it promotes the work of so-called “ex-gay therapy” groups such as Exodus International, Love Won Out and the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. The conversion therapy practiced by these groups has been denounced by the American Psychological Association, which refutes the notion that homosexuality is a mental illness.

The offended reader who was obviously a proponent of “ex-gay therapy” and a fan of Perry’s wrote, “Many, many people tormented with same-sex attraction have benefited from therapy. The homosexual pressure groups have no moral right to speak for these individuals.”

Anit-gay Texan Rick Perry has been getting a lot of attention. According to the conventional wisdom, he’s tied with Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

A lot of this has to do with timing. The field was looking stagnant when he arrived, using his 30,000 person strong prayer rally as a backdrop. Right now he’s being cast as the savior, stepping in to save the Republicans from a menu of unpalatable options.

But his image is also important. To me, Perry comes across as George W. Bush with a Tea Party makeover. I can’t see what appeal he has for the moderates, but the conservative pundits are talking about him as the guy everybody wants to have a beer with.

Fortunately, Perry is getting some rough press for his ties to the New Apostolic Reformation. For example, Christian blogger gives him a lot of heat, “We must separate ourselves from these false teachers, and continue to admonish, rebuke, and warn our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being caught up in the deception of ecumenical patriotism.”

California: On Tuesday, a jury found Pastor Christopher Iruke, his wife and an employee who worked for the couple guilty of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud in a scheme that involved more than $14 million in illegitimate Medicare claims.

Authorities said Iruke and associates often supplied power wheelchairs to Medicare patients perfectly capable of walking on their own —including one who did jumping jacks to show agents he never needed one. Also among the patients Iruke and his associates filed reimbursement claims for were two people who were deceased, according to court papers.

After purchasing the wheelchairs at about $900 wholesale and paying for the prescriptions, he pocketed the remainder of about $6,000 in taxpayer money he received as Medicare reimbursements, according to court documents. A popular Berlin priest admitted to police that he initiated lurid conversations with a 13-year-old boy on Facebook and by text message over several months, according to a warrant for his arrest released Tuesday.

The Rev. Michael Miller also told investigators he offered twice to commit sex acts with the boy who he met at St. Paul’s Church in Berlin, where the priest has served since 2006, and had other conversations of a sexual nature with the boy.

According to the warrant, Miller repeatedly engaged the young teen in sexually explicit conversations on the social networking site and via texting that included graphic descriptions of the acts he’d like to commit with the boy and other men. When Republican presidential candidates faced off Thursday night in the Iowa debate that set the stage for Saturday’s straw poll, it was a conservative columnist who asked Rep. Michele Bachmann a crucial question: what did she mean by her vow to be submissive to her husband?

The audience booed the question, which came from Byron York of the Washington Examiner. Bachmann smiled and said, “Thank you for that question, Byron. What submission means to me—if that’s what your question is—it means respect.”

No, Congresswoman, in fact, it doesn’t. Words have specific meanings, and your definition is incorrect, just as your answer to the question was disingenuous and obfuscatory. But so far, nobody is calling you on it.

From the outset, this whole issue was a problem Bachmann herself created; recalling that she hated the idea of pursuing a degree in tax law, she said she did so only because her husband told her to. “The Lord says, ‘Be submissive, wives. You are to be submissive to your husbands,’” she explained.

Bennett Sims, the former Episcopal bishop of Atlanta, believes that these verses have done more (harm) to form Christians' negative opinion of homosexuality than any other single passage in the Bible.

He writes:
"For most of us who seriously honor Scripture these verses still stand as the capital New Testament text that unequivocally prohibits homosexual behavior. More prohibitively, this text has been taken to mean that even a same-sex inclination is reprehensible, so that a type of humanity known as 'homosexual' has steadily become the object of contempt and discrimination."

Other Christians interpret the passage differently. They note that the persons involved in the orgy were former Christians, and were heterosexual. They are condemned because they went against their nature -- their heterosexual orientation -- and engaged in same-gender sexual behavior. By the same reasoning, lesbians and gays who went against their fundamental nature -- their homosexual orientation -- and engaged in opposite-gender sexual behavior would also be sinning.

"An Indiana state Representative, who recently voted for a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, has been accused of using Craigslist to offer an 18-year old male $80 for "a couple hours of your time tonight" plus a tip "for a really good time."

The Indianapolis Star obtained e-mails sent from Rep. Phillip Hinkle's (R) publicly listed personal address, responding to a Craigslist posting by Kameryn Gibson that said "I need a sugga daddy." Gibson told the Star that the post was in the "Casual Encounters" section under m4m, or men for men. He used his sister Megan's e-mail address -- and she later sent the e-mails to the Star.

"Cannot be a long time sugar daddy," says the e-mail response from what is allegedly Hinkle's address, "but can for tonight. Would you be interested in keeping me company for a while tonight?"

"I am an in shape married professional, 5'8", fit 170 lbs, and love getting and staying naked," the e-mail says.

Looks like President Obama isn't the only one who has to worry about approval ratings.

A new poll shows that little more than half of Americans say they approve of God's job performance, per Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52% of voters said they were pleased with how God seemed to be handling the universe when asked the question, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

Many didn't seemed not to want to make the Almighty angry -- 40% were "unsure."

Bert and Ernie represent the innocence of two good friends with vastly different interests. Bert with his pigeons and bottle cap collection, and Ernie as his natural foil with his tendency to get into mischief.

But it's quite indicative of society for not only groups to pressure Sesame Street into announcing the two as a couple, but for Sesame Street to feel the need to respond.

Perhaps the more than 5,000 petition signatures were all a big joke, but the comments on the Facebook announcement indicate otherwise.

The Facebook thread quickly descended into a debate on the pros vs. cons of having a gay character on the television program, among other discussions.

Has it really gotten to the point where we as consumers can't take something at face value and enjoy it?
As the Seinfeld show famously said, "Not that's there anything wrong with it," but why do two best friends have to be turned into an issue?

Worse is Sesame Street's need to even respond to this petition. They say there's no such thing as bad PR, but this might disprove that notion.

The White House has designated a gay ambassador

The White House has designated a gay administration official as the interim point of contact for the LGBT community until a permanent liaison is named, the Washington Blade has learned exclusively.

Shin Inouye, a White House spokesperson, said Raul Alvillar, who currently serves as associate director for public engagement at the Office of the Vice President, will serve as a temporary replacement for Brian Bond, the current LGBT liaison. Bond, who’s leaving later this month for a position at the Democratic National Committee, is deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and handled LGBT outreach as part of his portfolio.

“Following Brian’s departure from the White House to his new position at the DNC, we will have a full-time liaison to the LGBT community in the Office of Public Engagement in October,” Inouye said. “In the interim, Raul Alvillar from the Office of the Vice President will serve as the point of contact for the LGBT community for OPE.”

Alvillar, 33, served for two-and-a-half years as the congressional relations officer for the Department of Housing & Urban Development. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Alvillar was western political director for Obama and assisted with LGBT outreach and LGBT super delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

David Smith, the Human Rights Campaign’s vice president of programs, said in a statement HRC has heard “good things” about Alvillar.

“He has been with President Obama since the earliest days of the campaign,” Smith said. “Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett, Melody Barnes, director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Jon Carson, director of the Office of Public Engagement continue to shepherd our issues in the White House so we don’t anticipate these changes to cause any problems.”

Winnie Stachelberg, senior vice president for external affairs at the Center for American Progress, said she’s “thrilled” the White House has selected Alvillar as the interim LGBT liaison because of his work on LGBT politics and issues.

Debt deal could jeopardize HIV/AIDS funds

“He’s certainly got the ear of senior leadership in the White House, and it’s a good step,” Stachelberg said. “He’s got a sense of the policy from having worked in the legislative office. He’s worked in state politics, which I think is terribly important. He’s worked on the campaign. So, he’s someone who’s absolutely worked in a range of different positions, which I think will help him, and, ultimately, help the community to navigate these times and continue the progress that we’ve made on LGBT issues in the past two-and-a-half years.”
It’s unclear from the statement given by the White House whether Alvillar, or his permanent successor, will have the same role as Bond or if the position will be modified. Some LGBT advocates have been calling for the appointment of a more senior LGBT adviser who could more directly and consistently counsel Obama on LGBT issues.

Richard Socarides, president of Equality Matters, said the opportunity for the White House to create a more senior LGBT adviser still exists in the time period before a permanent replacement for Bond is named.
“What I think the community wants and deserves is a senior, full-time White House official at the special assistant or higher level whose sole responsibility is to represent the interests of the LGBT community at the White House and in the federal government,” Socarides said. “We deserve no less — and the time, the political moment calls for it. It should be clear to everyone.”

But Stachelberg maintained Obama already has a circle of senior advisers who counsel him on LGBT issues — including Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to the president; Melody Barnes, director of the Domestic Policy Council, and John Berry, who’s gay and director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management — and said the appointment of a senior LGBT adviser would be redundant.

“What the White House has with respect to LGBT issues is a senior leadership team to work on these issues,” Stachelberg said. “It’s important that it’s not just about a person, but that it’s about the senior leadership team that the president has around him that really deals with these issues all the time.”

GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have signed a narrowly written pledge against gay marriage, on the eve of a bus tour through Iowa highlighting values issues.

These presidential candidates "stand head and shoulders above the crowd as marriage champions, for their willingness to go beyond words to commit to concrete actions," Brian Brown, president of the Mormon funded/supported National Organization for Marriage (NOM), said in a statement.
The NOM pledge is more straightforward than a broadly written, controversial pledge by the conservative Family Leader group in Iowa.

In the NOM pledge, signers are committing to five points:

Sending a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman to the states for ratification.(we already have one of those thanks to Pres. Bush)
Defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which includes the traditional definition of marriage and bans states from recognizing gay marriage, in court.(Federal Law trumps State Law regardless of what the people want)
Appointing federal judges and an attorney general who are opposed to a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. (Hire judges that oppose constitutional rights? They are the ones we seek to support those rights.)
Appointing a commission to investigate claims of harassment against those people who support marriage as being only between a man and a woman. (Like NOM)
Supporting legislation that would give people living in the District of Columbia the right to vote on marriage.

Senate Confirms J. Paul Oetken, First Openly Gay Man to Serve on Federal Bench

The Senate voted 80-13 late this afternoon to confirm attorney J. Paul Oetken, a former Clinton administration lawyer recommended to Obama by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), as a U.S. District judge for the Southern District of New York.

Said Schumer on the Senate floor:

“As the first openly gay man to be confirmed as a federal judge and to serve on the federal bench, he will be a symbol of how much we have achieved as a country in just the last few decades. And importantly, he will give hope to many talented young lawyers who, until now, thought their paths might be limited because of their sexual orientation. When Paul becomes Judge Oetken, he will be living proof to all those young lawyers that it really does get better.”

Oetken is the first openly gay man to be confirmed to the federal judiciary.
Oetken, senior vice president and associate general counsel of Cablevision, was also a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun and worked in the Justice Department.

Equal Rights Remembered/ Ruby Bridges Visits the White House

In Spring 1960, Ruby Bridges was one of several African-Americans in New Orleans to take a test to determine which children would be the first to attend integrated schools. Six students were chosen, however, two students decided to stay at their old school, and three were transferred to Mcdonough. Ruby was the only one assigned to William Frantz. Her father initially was reluctant, but her mother felt strongly that the move was needed not only to give her own daughter a better education, but to "take this step forward ... for all African-American children."

The court-ordered first day of integrated schools in New Orleans, November 14, 1960, was commemorated by Norman Rockwell in the painting The Problem We All Live With.

As Bridges describes it, "Driving up I could see the crowd, but living in New Orleans, I actually thought it was Mardi Gras. There was a large crowd of people outside of the school. They were throwing things and shouting, and that sort of goes on in New Orleans at Mardi Gras."Former United States Deputy Marshal Charles Burks later recalled, "She showed a lot of courage. She never cried. She didn't whimper. She just marched along like a little soldier, and we're all very proud of her."

As soon as Bridges got into the school, white parents went in and brought their own children out; all teachers refused to teach while a black child was enrolled. They hired Barbara Henry, from Boston, Massachusetts, to teach Bridges, and for over a year Mrs. Henry taught her alone, "as if she were teaching a whole class." That first day, Bridges and her adult companions spent the entire day in the principal's office; the chaos of the school prevented their moving to the classroom until the second day. Every morning, as Bridges walked to school, one woman would threaten to poison her, because of this, the U.S. Marshals dispatched by President Eisenhower, who were overseeing her safety, only allowed Ruby to eat food that she brought from home. Another woman at the school put a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it outside the school, a sight that Bridges Hall has said "scared me more than the nasty things people screamed at us." At her mother's suggestion, Bridges began to pray on the way to school, which she found provided protection from the comments yelled at her on the daily walks.

An Austrian atheist has won the right to use a photo of him wearing a pasta strainer on his driving-licence claiming it is a "religious headgear".

Niko Alm first applied for the license three years ago after reading that headgear was allowed in official pictures only for confessional reasons. He has now finally won the right to have a pasta strainer on his head.

Mr Alm said the sieve was a requirement of his religion, pastafarianism.

The Austrian authorities naturally thought that Mr Alm was crazy and told him to obtain a doctor's certificate that proved that he was "psychologically fit" to drive.

You may think the pasta headgear is a bit bonkers but Mr Alm came up with the plan three years ago as a way of making a serious, if ironic, point about religion and its influence on society.

A self-confessed atheist, Mr Alm says he belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a light-hearted faith whose members call themselves pastafarians (not a joke people).

The group's website states that "the only dogma allowed in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is the rejection of dogma".

In response to pressure for American schools to teach creationism, as an alternative to normal biology, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster wrote to the Kansas School Board asking for the pastafarian version of how we all came to be on this earth to be taught to their schoolchildren, as an alternative to the Christian theory.

The next step, Mr Alm told the Austrian news agency APA, is to apply to the Austrian authorities for pastafarianism to become an officially recognized faith.

Frank DeTucci, 70, had $200 in his shoe and another $153 in his wallet when a guard at the Queensboro Correctional Facility spotted him kneeling Sunday in front of the prisoner, officials say.

When questioned, DeTucci admitted that on July 5 he paid the same inmate $120 and $150 on two separate occasions to perform oral sex on him in the chaplain's office at the minimum-security Long Island City facility.
DeTucci has been a chaplain for the state correctional system for 27 years and is a deacon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Astoria. A church spokeswoman said he would be placed on administrative leave as soon as notified.

DeTucci faces up to four years in prison on charges that include official misconduct, engaging in a criminal sex act and sexual misconduct.

DeTucci, who was hired by the state Department of Corrections in 1992, was arrested by state police.
He is charged with criminal sex act, attempted criminal sex act, sexual misconduct, attempted sexual misconduct and official misconduct, said a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
DeTucci, who lives in Astoria and earns $79,819 a year at his job, has been put on leave without pay, said a spokeswoman for the state prison system.

THE FAMILY LEADER’s 14-point marriage pledge for presidential candidates references various historic anecdotes to contextualize its principles. The very first point it makes, however, suggests the group didn’t quite do all their history research:

Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President.

While the laws governing slavery varied from state to state, one point was consistent: slaves were property and could not be party to a contract, including a marriage contract. This meant that no slave unions were legally recognized, and even the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863) did not change this. For example, the 1860 District of Columbia’s Slavery Code dictated that ministers shall not “join in marriage any negro whatsoever or mulatto slave with any white person” (Sec. 56 on p. 19). Slaveowners encouraged slaves to couple (so as to reproduce free new slaves) and slaves certainly held religious marriage ceremonies, but those marriages had no legal validity. Owners had no obligation to respect them or even keep married couples together on the same plantation. Most importantly, as Baratunde Thurston points out, children born into slavery were the property of their master.

In footnote 8(1) of the pledge, The FAMiLY LEADER notes their “never disproven” belief that the health and well-being of children is “best upheld” through “legal marriage, especially faithful monogamy, as between only one man and one woman.”

Essentially, The FAMiLY LEADER has used its marriage pledge to suggest an exception for African-American children — that not only were they better off born into slavery, they were also better off having unwed parents.
Since the pledge was released yesterday, GOP presidential hopefuls Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN) and former Sen. Rick Santorum (PA) are the only two candidates to have signed it.

WHO ARE THE FRC?

The Family Research Council (FRC) bills itself as “the leading voice for the family in our nation’s halls of power,” but its real specialty is defaming gays and lesbians. The FRC often makes false claims about the LGBT community based on discredited research and junk science. The intention is to denigrate LGBT people in its battles against same-sex marriage, hate crimes laws, anti-bullying programs and the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.To make the case that the LGBT community is a threat to American society, FRC employs a number of “policy experts” whose “research” has allowed FRC to be extremely active politically in shaping public debate. Westboro Baptist Church Guest Speaker at FBI Traning Session

Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay Topeka congregation known for protesting military funerals, has sent guest speakers to FBI training sessions, the bureau said.

But church members won’t be welcome in the future.

The sessions were designed to teach younger FBI agents and law-enforcement officers around the country how to deal with groups they strongly disagree with, said church member Timothy Phelps, who spoke at some of the sessions.

According to National Public Radio, which first reported the story, the bureau won’t invite the congregation back. Church members were not paid for speaking, Phelps and the FBI told NPR.

The Associated Press quoted an unnamed FBI official who said the bureau underestimated how Westboro Baptist’s involvement would be viewed.

Phelps said he emphasized the need to respect his church’s First Amendment rights. The agents and officers were allowed to ask questions, and some of them were aggressive, but Phelps described the sessions as “very dynamic.”

Some of the officers and agents, though, questioned the decision to have Westboro Baptist members speak and contacted FBI leadership, which didn’t know about the sessions, NPR reported. Church members were not paid for speaking, Phelps and the FBI told NPR.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said Westboro was invited “in an effort to establish open dialogue in an academic setting to train law enforcement on how to more effectively engage with the activist community.”
In the future, there will be additional layers of review or approval before an outside speaker is invited, an unnamed official told the AP

Phelps said he learned from the NPR report that Westboro will not be invited again.
“It doesn’t surprise me,” Phelps said. “We don’t have an agenda other than to preach. If we’re not there, we’re going to be somewhere else.”

TRACY, CA - A 65-year-old Tracy resident was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.

A Pastor is facing five counts of lewd acts with a child, and investigators worry there may be more victims.
Dr. Roger Earl Rickman, a pastor at Fresh Anointing Faith International Christian Church in Tracy, was arrested earlier this week. He faces three counts of lewd acts with a child under ten and two counts of lewd acts with a child under 14.

Although this would suggest at least two victims, investigators would neither confirm nor deny the number of victims currently involved, but did say they are looking for more.

According to his online resume, 65-year-old Rickman is also CEO of Superior Private Investigations and COO at Rickman CPA Organization. He is Board Certified in Integrative Medicine and a FEMA Certified Master Chaplain, and specializes in therapeutic grade essential healing oils.

He spent two decades in Asia, ten of those with the US Air Force. It also says he is a vibrations expert, writing two books on vibration analysis of high-speed rotating equipment.

Cops started investigating him earlier this month after the parents of a 7-year-old girl said Rickman sexually assaulted their daughter.

Tracy Police say Rickman’s mugshot is not being released because their investigation is on-going. They also clarify that Rickman is not related to Tracy Councilman Robert Rickman.

Michele Bachmann, Anti Gay just got a bump

Representative Michele Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican planning to seek the party's presidential nomination, said she would stoke U.S. economic growth by cutting taxes on corporate income and capital gains and considering elimination of the minimum wage.

Corporate tax rates should be significantly reduced from a maximum 35 percent and capital gains taxes should be eliminated, Bachmann said in an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation" today. Congress should also reevaluate the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, she said.

"Whatever it takes, that's what we need to do for job creation," said Bachmann. She said President Barack Obama "doesn't seem to have an understanding of how to do the job."

Bachmann is vehemently against gay marriage

Bachmann has experienced a bump in support in the wake of her participation in this week’s Republican debates, confirming her place as a serious contender for the GOP nomination. While Bachmann has been the focus of a whole mess o’ media attention during her career, much of it has focused on her… unique… take on historical events and her physical attributes rather than on specific policies or beliefs, so it’s worth it to try and understand just where the Congresswoman stands.

Bachmann once made the news for having hid behind bushes in order to observe a gay rights rally.

In April of 2005, shortly after The Bush Incident, Bachmann attended a forum with her constituents in Scandia, Minnesota when she was approached by two women while washing her hands in a bathroom. The two women were Pamela Arnold, a middle-aged lesbian working for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design who had wanted to speak with Bachmann about her thoughts on gay marriage, and a middle-aged former nun who tried to engage Bachmann in a discussion on theology. Bachmann responded by crying, screaming “Help!” and running out of the bathroom, later telling police that she was afraid of what the two women might to do her.But from where did these beliefs come?

Raised in a Lutheran, Democratic household by her mother and stepfather, Bachmann was born again at the age 16. After graduating high school, she traveled to Israel to become more in touch with her new faith and later attended Winona State University, where she met her husband. Bachmann and her husband campaigned for Jimmy Carter in ‘76, but soon converted to the right, as did many adherents of the burgeoning evangelical movement. [I strongly suggest you read the full Daily Beast article for more details about this, because it's an interesting little slice of American history that just so happened to have huge - huge - implications for our current political landscape.]

Evangelism has played a role not only in Bachmann’s politics, but also in the way she expresses herself. Valerie Tarico, author of The Dark Side: How Evangelical Teachings Corrupt Love and Truth, wrote a piece on the way certain politicians use, as she dubs it, “Evangelese” to speak to their supporters, and how it’s nearly impossible to mimic this language unless one is intimately familiar with Christian fundamentalist thought and rhetoric. Understanding such rhetoric is a helpful means of putting Bachmann’s statements – which may be confusing or downright incorrect to some ears – into context.

Complicating, then, Bachmann’s rhetoric and her opinions regarding same-sex marriage is the fact that she has a gay stepsister:

In 2004, Bachmann gave a speech warning that gay marriage would lead to schoolchildren being indoctrinated into homosexuality. She wanted everyone to know, though, that she doesn’t hate gay people. “Any of you who have members of your family in the lifestyle, we have a member of our family that is,” she said. “This is not funny. It’s a very sad life. It’s part of Satan, I think, to say that this is gay.”
She was clearly talking about her 51-year-old stepsister, Helen LaFave, who had lived with her partner, Nia Wronski, for more than 15 years. As Bachmann became the public face of opposition to gay marriage, her relationship with her stepsiblings grew strained. “Helen always liked Michele, always,” says Linda Cielinski, one of Bachmann’s other stepsisters. “They lived together as teenage girls. They were very close at that time.” Bachmann’s anti-gay activism, Cielinski says, “was a hit to the gut.”

The political is always personal. And, as Goldberg points out, it’s Bachmann’s unwavering dedication to her ideals and her ethical code because of or despite her stepsister’s sexual orientation that helps cement her favor with her supporters.

Current estimates hold that something between 25 and 30 percent of the U.S. population is part of the Evangelical movement, making this a powerful group in terms of political influence, with same-sex marriage (specifically, opposition to it) being a major concern, even for those on the Christian left.
Several candidates (potential and official) on the right – Tim Pawlenty (an Evangelical Baptist), for instance, and Rick Perry (a Methodist) – have made their religious leanings a major factor in their political careers. And, although he is much more moderate than Bachmann, Mitt Romney’s religion – Mormonism – is also often mentioned when discussing his policies, as has Rick Santorum’s Roman Catholicism, especially where the latter’s stance on gay rights is concerned.

With Bachmann and Romney currently viewed as the party’s two front runners, voters who lean to the right, regardless of party affiliation, may make their ultimate decision based on the respective faiths of these two remarkably different candidates – not to mention the impact Evangelical Christianity and Mormonism have on their political leanings particularly where their differing takes on gay rights are concerned.

Nice to see he has a sense of humor. That was a month ago. He's not laughing now. New York showed the world that democracy works and the people voice was heard. After this vote, it became clearer than ever that Senior's time has passed, and the balance of power in civil rights has shifted in favor of his 22-year-old lesbian granddaughter, Erica Díaz. She is avidly protesting her grandfathers speeches any time any place.

With a historic vote by its Legislature late Friday, New York became the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage since Massachusetts led the way, under court order, in 2004.

With the new law, which takes effect after 30 days, the number of Americans in same-sex marriage states more than doubles. New York's population of 19 million surpasses the combined total of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa, plus Washington, D.C., where same-sex marriages are legal.

The outcome — a product of intensive lobbying by the new Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo — will have nationwide repercussions. Activists hope the New York vote will help convince judges and politicians across the country, including a hesitant President Obama, that support of same-sex marriage is now a mainstream viewpoint and a winning political stance.

Groups rallying against gay marriage have vowed to unseat the politicians that helped pass it.
The conservative National Organization for Marriage has announced a new campaign to punish Republicans who supported gay marriage and to try to overturn the law.

Dean Skelos voted against gay marriage in New York, but the Family Research Council is furious with him anyway. In a statement, the conservative group said Democrats pushed gay marriage through, but as the Republican Senate majority leader, Skelos is responsible for allowing that to happen.
Skelos told NPR why he decided not to block the bill.

"Because I believe in democracy," he said. "I believe legislators are elected to make their own choices to vote — to vote their constituents, to vote their conscience."

Skelos says it is important that the new law protect people who object to gay marriage from lawsuits — such as churches that don't want to hold gay weddings, or clergy who don't want to perform them.

A short time ago people started making "It gets better" videos to prevent (or try to prevent) teen suicides. Personally I don't feel these videos work. I recall President Reagan cutting funding to Methadone Clinics that helped heroin addicts. Detoxing addicts sitting with a gun in one hand and a pile of cocaine on a table, debating which one to use. Look up and see Nancy Reagan on TV telling you, "Just say no". Silly fucking me. Thanks Nancy! The get better slogan smells similar.Super rich popular people telling you not to worry. Don't kill yourself, I need you to buy my albums.Not everyone will become famous and successful. Many will still be whispered about by coworkers and denied equal treatment because of intolerance.

I faced my challenges as a gay teen. We didn't even have video then, let alone any support from the community around me. Taking my own life never entered the thought process. A line read by Basil Rathbone from Sherlock Holmes movie always came to mind. "Your life is not your own," he said. "Keep your hands off it."

Nepal census recognizes 'third gender'

Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN) -- When census gatherers went door-to-door visiting 5.6 million households across Nepal this month, they collected information not only on the country's men and women, but also on a so-called third gender.

In what is believed to be a world first, Nepal's Central Bureau of Statistics is giving official recognition to gay and transgender people -- a move seen as major victory for equality in a country that only decriminalized homosexual relationships three years ago.

Among those happy to stand up and be counted in the third gender category is Dilu Buduja, 35. "I was born as a girl, but as I grew up I felt I was a boy. Today I totally feel like a man," he said.

A spokesman for the statistics bureau, Bikash Bista, said the new categorization was an attempt to open up the traditionally conservative country up to different points of view.

But the state's recognition of the rights of gender minorities, gays and lesbians has not come without a fight.
"We had to put in a lot of pressure to have the third gender counted in the census," said gender minority rights activist Sunil Babu Pant.

"It was only after we said that we would go to court that the officials agreed to include the third gender as a category."

If the case had gone to court, it would likely have been upheld thanks to a landmark 2007 Supreme Court ruling that directed the state to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and decriminalize "unnatural sex."

It also decreed the issue of citizenship certificates that clearly indicate an individual's choice of gender identity.

Kentucky swimming pool bans gays citing the Bible

The Advocate reports today that two gay men accompanied by a mental health case manager were blocked from entering a city owned swimming pool in Hazard, Kentucky. The city employee cited the Bible as the reason that he could bar them from using the facility. He told the case worker that "it was in the Bible." He said that "they" own the place and could do whatever they wanted. No amount of intelligent arguing would dissuade him. The worker told him that it was discrimination. He didn't care. The worker and two men eventually left the premises. No word was mentioned from the Public Recreation Director, Bill Morgan. Their website only lists a fax number.

BECK: Would you do that to a Catholic or would you do that to a Mormon?

CAIN: Nope, I wouldn’t. Because there is a greater dangerous part of the Muslim faith than there is in these other religions. I know that there are some Muslims who talk about, “but we are a peaceful religion.” And I’m sure that there are some peace-loving Muslims.

Eliza Martinelli, 34-year-old former teacher from Chigago, Illinois, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting four students.

Martinelli, who lives in the 1500 block of South Raymond in Naperville, told sexy stories, plied teens with alcohol and performed sex acts on three girls and a boy, prosecutors told a judge yesterday. All the victims were students of Dayspring Christian Academy. Abuse began in 1998 and continued to 2007. The school is affiliated with a church pastored by her father.

The alleged victims were all between the ages of 13 and 17 at the time of the abuse, when Martinelli had sex or performed sex acts on them in her home, their homes and in her car. One of the alleged victims came forward in April, years after the alleged abuse, authorities said.

The first victim that investigators have found was 15-year-old when Martinelli began abuse in 1998. She had taught her in 7th and 8th grade, prosecutor said. What began as sexual stories escalated into full abuse of the girl, he said. That abuse lasted almost three years until 2001. A couple of years later, in March 2003, when Martinelli was 26, she preyed on another 15-year-old girl and her brother while their parents were away.

Assistant State’s Attorney Kathy Muldoon said Martinelli repeatedly assaulted a teenage girl and her younger brother, whom she had met through the church, from March 2003 to March 2006. Martinelli even babysat for the victims while their parents were out of town once, and sexually assaulted the girl and the boy, again using alcohol to facilitate te assaults. She had sexual intercourse with the boy for about a year, he said. After that she found a 14 year-old-girl who had belonged to the church and was Martinelli’s student in 6th and 8th grades, Conklin said, and engaged in mutual sex acts with the girl until March 2007 when the teen’s family moved out of the area.
